Ben Hewitt showed me how to count what counts.
I had been only counting the score of how much my coaching team were billing.
That did not fully feed me – my intent is To Transform.
So Ben encouraged me to begin to also count the transformations that my work is making.
Already I feel more nourished by my achievement.
Learn
So I learn that I am nourished by an earn, a learn or a transformation.
My learn this month is from a link that Chris Howe sent me of a TED lecture given by Sir Ken Robinson where he shares his beliefs on our education system and how it is damaging our children’s creativity. This is just under 20 minutes long and very enjoyable. http://tinyurl.com/mluw5k

I am grateful to Dawn Scott for sharing her story.
“As it is my birthday today I thought I would share this with you. It has only taken me 48 years to realise that the more you love people openly and explicitly, the more you are loved in return and this just makes that lovely feeling grow even stronger. So with that in mind I brought into work some birthday goodies for the people I am working with at present and in return for a goodie I asked each of them to write down one thing that they love about their life right now. I left the stuff in the kitchen with the page to write on. The response has been fab – people have taken time to really think about something good for once (instead of all the worry stuff they carry around) and it has caused quite a stir. I am enjoying the reaction each time someone new goes into the kitchen and so far this is a selection of what people have shared:
Getting “Huggles” from my children
Happy bees; cheerful chickens
Walking in a thunder storm; rain in my wellies Starting my morning with a nuzzle from someone who gives me unconditional love Getting a “buzz” in the morning from my friends My boy’s smile when I get home The joy of my grandchildren Family first last and always”

I recently appointed another group of Discordian Saints.

I have written a bit about the distinction between goals and vision.
Goals usually contain numbers, which do not tend to create feelings in me.
Try this – 68.
What about 146?
No, me neither.
Vision describes how things could be better around here.
Well done, that makes an image in the minds of the audience.
Which creates a feeling.
When you realise what feeling your vision creates, you can ask what you can do tomorrow to create that same feeling.
Then you’re bringing your vision to life tomorrow.

Peter Knight contributes this passage.
I’ve heard that a meeting of the General Synod has been held as a consequence of a new trend in wedding ceremonies which they find most disturbing. Apparently self-ordained ministers are conducting proceedings which cause the congregation to laugh out loud, frequently and more to be moved by modern day stories and anecdotes that are relevant to 21st century life.
Understandably the General Synod is most concerned that this does not catch on and will be issuing a statement that anyone getting married in this way can expect consequences including for Church of England and Catholics an even hotter hell, a reduction in the number of saved souls (for Jehovah’s witnesses) from 144,000 to 99,000 and for Muslim martyrs getting married just 27 virgins will await them rather than the current 72.
Having just last weekend reached the milestone (or is that millstone?) 22 year anniversary (the spelling is remarkably similar to adversary don’t you think) I’m considering converting and claiming my share of virgins whilst there are still some available.

I declare that target setting seems to me to be an ineffective practice now.
Goals seem to be built around numbers. Numbers do not create feelings in your people.
Try these – 67, 295, 1012.
Get a feeling as a result?
Didn’t think so.
A vision is a description of how things might be better.
“We have become a group that people want to come and join.”
“We now only produce work that makes us proud.”
That sort of thing has the potential to create energy – feeling – in the people. Next month I shall explain how you can bring your vision to life today.

Readers of Reflections passim will remember the early editions when I emphasised the importance of the State of the learner. Relaxed and Alert works for fast learning.
One thing I have recently discovered in meetings, training and coaching is that once the client has told me what they specifically want to cover in the session, their state changes into more relaxed and alert, because they have told me what is in this session for them.
I hope that repeating myself every 9 years or so doesn’t grate on my reader.

If you have been following Reflections from the beginning, you will remember me carping on about organisations benefitting from hierarchies of values from the times of the train crashes, when the train companies began to put profit before safety.
Well, now Toyota is feeling the effects of confusing their value hierarchy. “Traditionally” their values stacked up as safety, quality and then volume. Consider the harm to their brand by forgetting to keep the main thing the main thing.

We treated ourselves to a new coffee system at home for Christmas.
We chose the Nespresso one.
Here is a terrific example of repositioning your business in a downturn by repackaging your product and leveraging your intellectual property.
Nestle know lots about coffee. The new system has lovely brochures which make the user more of an expert about coffee.
After all, we have had to learn a new language just to order a coffee in the HIgh Street.
The system uses small pods of coffee that transform into delicious drinks that are much tastier than
the stuff in the chains, at a fraction of the price.
Nestle have me now as a repeat client getting supplies on line and writing recommendations like this.
What can you repackage in your product?

Leading means going first.
One of the clues to leading is predicting the future and then showing your followers where to go to get there.
One of the best things I have learned from Darren Shirlaw is how to know what the economy is going to do next.
The answer is to watch the movement of the financial markets – the FTSE index is the indicator I’m keeping an eye on.
The reason is that the economy mirrors the movement in the market, but about 6-9 months later.
And it works.
So what we can expect is that the economy will gain in confidence until the middle of 2010 and then stabilise and plateau for a period.
Look for yourself.
You’ll make better decisions.

Keeping your eye on the long haul – your intent for the business other than making money -can be difficult, especially in a long downturn.
It’s useful to put a focus for the stage your organisation is at.
At Shirlaws, we recommend three focal points at any one time.
For one client recently, they have chosen to focus on building intellectual property assets, building a world class group and improving margin.
That will provide an anchor for the leadership throughout 2010.

I currently believe that one of the reasons that organisations are not meeting their sales aspirations is that some of the sales folk do not understand how much value your work brings to your clients.
That is often simply because they have not seen the effects from the client’s perspective.
Have them ask what value your product/service brings to them and stand back in amazement.
